Traveling and Dining: Grand Hotel Union Executive Ljubljana

A very disappointing two days stay, at €250 a night excluding taxes we were given a smelly and dirty suite which to be honest we would not let our dog to stay in, if we had one. Even the telephone was not working. Then to add an insult to injury we were then given a second suite which was just as bad. We very very disappointed to acknowledge that the reception staff seemed to think the whole experience was a joke. Eventually, a very concerned and helpful porter sorted everything out. We were moved to a better suite.
Our reason for choosing the Grand Union was its claim for hotel excellence and one of the finest hotel with restaurants and coffee lounges which to our surprise were both closed so the only place left to eat was the Garden restaurant which at 33 °C was not at all comfortable. We were going to sit inside instead of boiling ourselves in the garden but we got put off by the fact the inside restaurant was used for staff to chat and rest up. Even the lights were not switched on. So, we were stuck outside. Tried to make ourselves comfortable we looked through the menu. We could not see anything typical slovenian food that we have expected. The menu was mainly consisted of pasta dishes and mediterranean. So, we chose baked octopus. That was ok. Octopus was tender and the mixed mediterranean vegetables were quite tasty.

Overal, our stay was well below expectation. The refurbished suite was comfortable but it was a struggle to get it. Food was average as we had nothing to compare it with. But we certainly would not recommend this hotel to our readers.
