Double Tree Luxembourg

Hotel for families at very reasonable rates, staff helpful though not all seem to be enjoying their work.
Rooms were mostly spacious and comfortable. But we noticed in some bathrooms they still left an old shower head, which we found rather dangerous when we turn the hot tap, unaware that it sprays water with a great pressure. Family with young children should be alert!
Menu at Restaurant Indigo were average Hilton food. Basic café style décor seating, rather uncomfortable. Typical buffet breakfast buffet. Hot food were cold, not good at all. Staff seemed a little bed slow in topping up food that was almost finished.
Free parking, forest walks and other out door activities,
Luxembourg town was ok. We got the impression that most restaurant owners seemed to dislike tourists, or just did not have a clue? Over priced, badly cooked and presented. Overall, it was okay for a day trip but we would suggest you to arrange your own food.

Note: The double tree cookie was good though!

Grand Hotel Union Executive Ljubljana - Slovenia

A very disappointing two days stay, at €250 a night excluding taxes we were given a smelly and dirty suite which to be honest we would not let our dog to stay in, if we had one. Even the telephone was not working. Then to add an insult to injury we were then given a second suite which was just as bad. We very very disappointed to acknowledge that the reception staff seemed to think the whole experience was a joke. Eventually, a very concerned and helpful porter sorted everything out. We were moved to a better suite.
Our reason for choosing the Grand Union was its claim for hotel excellence and one of the finest hotel with restaurants and coffee lounges which to our surprise were both closed so the only place left to eat was the Garden restaurant which at 33 °C was not at all comfortable. We were going to sit inside instead of boiling ourselves in the garden but we got put off by the fact the inside restaurant was used for staff to chat and rest up. Even the lights were not switched on. So, we were stuck outside. Tried to make ourselves comfortable we looked through the menu. We could not see anything typical slovenian food that we have expected. The menu was mainly consisted of pasta dishes and mediterranean. So, we chose baked octopus. That was ok. Octopus was tender and the mixed mediterranean vegetables were quite tasty.

Overal, our stay was well below expectation. The refurbished suite was comfortable but it was a struggle to get it. Food was average as we had nothing to compare it with. But we certainly would not recommend this hotel to our readers.

Hilton Budapest - Hungary

What an amazing location! As tourists we would not find better place to stay. But be warned, the hotel was difficult to find. Very bad sign posting, so many guests with cars complained. As we entered the hotel, we immediately noticed that the whole hotel interior was very out dated. Rather unusual to most Hilton hotels we have stayed in. We went to reception desk to check in, but we were told to go to executive floor. We thought as Hilton Honor Diamond VIP member we would get the privilege to check in anywhere but obviously we were wrong. As we went up to the executive floor, we found nobody to check us in. Luckily we did not have to wait for long. Check in sorted, off we went to the room, through a long hall way that was badly lit, especially with dark carpet that reminded us of something out of the 1980's. The room itself was average, but it came with a nice view of the castle and river that separates Buda and Pest.

We did not try the restaurant but the room service was not too bad. It was not exactly a taste of Hungary tough. We were not in our adventurous mood at that time, so we had the famous Hilton burger. But, not to be totally ignorant towards Hungarian culture, we had goulash soup too!

The breakfast at executive lounge was same old.. same old Hilton buffet. Powdered scrambled eggs and dried up bacon and bits and pieces. We were not impressed at all. Never mind.. its just one of those things we get in our lives.

Take a tour around on sightseeing bus is a must. We found it as the best way to discover Budapest as there were so many tourist objects which almost impossible to discover all in one day. Do not forget to pop in to Danubius Gellert Hotel even only to taste ice coffee and strudel.

Wabi Sabi - Bratislava

Japanese restaurant located on the promenade of Danube river, Bratislava.
Average quality of sushi and well overpriced sake. Was not run seriously as restaurant, in our opinion. We   chose a table at the back as we thought it was the coolest spot out of the whole restaurant, next to the cashier and kitchen. They have several staff on duty, but most were too busy chatting, left us with one staff running around looking after our table and few other tables on the terrace. Not the place we would come back to.

Kempinski Hotel River Park - Bratislava - Slovakia

Comfortable hotel for short weekend stay, site seeing or business. Great location over looking the Danube. Great to take a short stroll on the promenade where few local restaurants and cafes were set up. Watch out for outside restaurants over charging though.
The hotel itself has very friendly staff both at the reception also at the restaurant. The room was furnished tastefully in bright colours. The bed was reasonably firm and comfortable. Bathroom and shower was quite exceptional. If there was a downside about the room was the lack of tea and coffee making equipment and we had the room at the front of the building where we could hear the trams passing by every 15 minutes.

Restaurant ‘Riverbank’ in hotel was very good. A must to try the local dishes and wines. The head waiter: Ratislav and his staff were very helpful though a little miserable to start with… Only real criticism was the kid’s area in the restaurant with Wendy type play house and cars bit off putting if you are seeking a quiet dinner for two.

Local dishes that we have tasted for diner were:
Esencia z bazanta/ Pheasant Essence made from Slovak ingredients only, with karpatske special brandy and tatras forest mushroom as starter. Continued by Bravcova panenka s bryndzovymi haluskami
Panenka s tradicnymi bryndzovymi haluskami chroumkavou cibolkou a prelivom z pecenej papriky/
Pork loin with bryndza halusky - Traditional Slovak dish from Liptov region, crispy onion, roast  paprika infusion as main course. Last but not least was the dessert. We had Cerstva malinova torta/ Fresh raspberry tart and selection of cheeses.
Red wine – Neronet Pavelska Terra Panna Modry Portugal 2008 Barrique
Dessert wine - Irsai Oliver Zitavske 2009 0,375 liter  (sweet, aromatic, hint of rose petal, not too intense)
The whole dining experience was delightful.

‘Arte Bar’ serving selection of desserts and beverages. We had crème brulee, tiramisu and slovak lager Zlaty Bazant. Very odd combination, we must admit, but that was exactly what we fancied at the time.

Not to be missed was the complimentary service from the hotel, drop off service to the old town of Bratislava by hotel Rolls Royce Phantom which about 10 minutes drive away. Very nice touch, Kempinski!

Sheraton Hotel - Nuremberg - Germany

Difficult to find due to road works, one would think Sheraton would put out enough signs to assist the weary traveler..
Check in was quick and efficient. The room was average. Ideal for one day stop over not for long stay.

We enjoyed a well deserved meal at Restaurant ‘Tafelhof’ although we were the only customers. The staff were friendly and attentive.
As starter, we had herb cream soup with garlic crouton. Excellent soup but portion was rather large. We also had smoked salmon with dill sauce, that was tasty. Followed by curry sausage with French fries as main course. Very well spiced german sausage, though the curry sauce could have done with less sugar.
To satisfy our sweet tooth, we had raspberry tart, mascarpone and vanilla ice cream and chocolate mousse.
Good all round meal for under €25 a head, great as a stop over hotel but not to holiday, more geared for the business travelers.

Palazzo Magnani Feroni - Firenze - Italy

A palace at the city centre of Florence.
It was our first stay at this palazzo, very impressed with the information provided on the website. We were really looking forward to our stay.
Finally arrived at walled city of Florence, we almost missed the turning to our palazzo as the city is full of narrow streets and few road works going on. So we got diverted to several places, but we made it at the end.

The exterior face of the palazzo was grey and shabby, did not express the grandeur of the idea of a palace we had in mind. Beside that, the garage door was not well sign posted. Very easily to be missed. Luckily we had our eyes wide open to find it, as we would not want to turn around in such busy traffic. And the palazzo staff were very helpful. Our car just fitted through the garage door, securely parked to rest for two nights before we continue to the next destination.
From the garage we walked through the patio to the the reception area. Friendly and welcoming receptionist checked us in very efficiently then escorted us to our 'Beatrice' suite. Our suite located on the second floor, so we went up by a beautiful period iron lift. Very authentic. Quite extraordinary.
Our suite was not disappointing. Generous space living and bed room. Furnished to match the period of the building with modern amenities. The bathroom was rather small though, especially the shower cubical. But, not a big deal.

Our suite came with two flat screen tv with sky, but english speaking channels were very limited. But again, we did not come all the way to Italy to watch telly. There was no restaurant in the palazzo, but they do have open bar on the fourth floor which we had to climb the stairs from the second floor. Quite exhausting, we must admit.
Back down on the second floor, on the other side of our suite was game room and dining room where breakfast would be served.
If room service menu does not satisfy you, just outside the palazzo you would find 'Dante Restaurant' that is open all day. Palazzo provides fresh fruit in most public area with tea and coffee making equipment and cake in the afternoon. Not to be missed.

We only had two days to stay and there were so many things to visit and see in Florence, we started the day early. A good breakfast was compulsory. We went to the dining room, where italian buffet breakfast laid out nicely, but we wanted something more special. We ordered their cheese and ham omelette from the a la carte menu. That was so delicious. Light, fluffy and tasty. Certainly the best omelette we ever had!!! And a couple cups of cappuccino after, we were set for the day. Bought sight seeing tour ticket at the reception desk, off we went to discover city of flower, Florence.

The palazzo was a unique place to stay. It was quite an experience to stay there. We would recommend this place to people who appreciate authentic italian history and culture.

Le Caveau 30 - Cannes - France

If we fancy a meal out in Cannes, this restaurant would be our first choice. We believe the locals would have the same idea too. This restaurant has a large of selection of French cuisine, seafood, white and also red meat dishes. For us, being near the sea, we would stick with the seafood. They are the best on that. Started with half a dozen of oysters fines de claires no.3 and fried white baits. Light and tasty entrees. Followed by lobster thermidor served saffron rice and simply baked sea bass. Delicious!!
And of course, a lunch would not be complete without a sweet treat. So, we went for mixed of vanilla  and chocolate ice cream with cherry brandy and kirch covered with fresh cherries. A portion was enough for two!! Must try! Phone to make a reservation, they do get busy especially during lunch time.

Carlton Intercontinental - Cannes - France

Cannes has always been one of our favourite places to visit. Carlton Intercontinental became our choice to stay since Noga Hilton changed hand to JW Marriot. Located at the famous Croisette Boulevard overlooking the sea and surrounded by high-end boutiques. You cannot really miss this hotel, its beautiful facade and towers stand out among other five star hotel on the same boulevard.

In the last couple of years we have stayed in most room types. From their classic rooms, deluxe and also suites. The suite was quite exceptional. When we could, we always try to take an advantage of the spacious room and best view, by having breakfast in the room facing the sea.

It was lovely. Well.. at least it was until the rush hour started. On our last stay last week though, we booked our room online on their special offer. We ended up with an antiquated room located far end of the hotel's fifth floor. It has a noisy air conditioner, came with a view of a wall of building next door and if we look down, we got to see a garbage container! Interesting!

Never mind, we did not come all the way to cannes to spend most time in the room anyways. As usual we took a stroll around the shopping streets or sometimes, early morning jog along the promenade.

For dining experience, we preferred to dine at Carlton Restaurant instead of the Carlton Beach Restaurant. In our last experience, the Beach Restaurant served an enormous portion of food. Too touristy. Yet the Carlton Restaurant seemed to serve a normal portion of food. Well, that was how we noticed it anyways.
So far, this is the place we would recommend for a nice beef tartar, served with green salad and french fries. Their sea bass was not too bad and desserts were not disappointing. Mediocre quality of food overall. The male waiting staff were a little bit grumpy though while the female waiting staff were more friendly.

At this moment they have lobster special every Friday at €65 including a glass of champagne. We kept missing the chance to try it, unfortunately.
So, if you have tried it, let us know how it was!

Hilton Lyon - France

LYON - Drove passed it many times but always got put off by heavy traffic, old oil refineries and walls full of graffitis. But... as it happened to be at half way to our main destination, we thought why not??!
We booked a King Royal Suite at Hilton Lyon for one night, sounded fancy eh?!
Don't get too excited though..

The hotel was quite difficult to find, out of the way from the city centre. We arrived at the hotel on Sunday afternoon just before 4 PM, nobody to greet us nor assisted us with the luggage, how strange, we wondered. After hours in the car, totally exhausted, we dragged ourselves to the reception desk, checked us in and finally managed to get the porter out of his hiding quarter.
As we approached the lift, we saw the sign for Blue Elephant - Thai Restaurant, something interesting at last. But, we were out of luck, the restaurant is closed on Sunday and Monday.

Anyways, we have a suite to look forward to, we thought. Feeling like royalty, we approached our King Royal Suite on the executive floor. On the door there was an advert of La Brasserie inviting us to try their French cuisine served all day. Must try!
How disappointing were we to discover a suite with bubbled up carpet fitting that was full of food stains, standard bathroom and an extension room that was meant to be our lounge. Why on earth did they name this room as King Royal Suite as there was nothing royal about it at all??

Overal size of the room was ok. But the furnishing was poor. They provided two flat screen televisions, smaller one in the bedroom and one in the lounge. The one in the lounge was attached to the corner wall with a desk underneath. Unless we have extra long neck or lean our head to 90° to the left all the time, we could not get a full view of the screen from the sofa.

We decided to pop down to the reception desk to confirm if they gave us the right suite, but apparently it was. Too tired to complain, we gave in and tried our luck in the restaurant La Brasserie. Surprise surprise .. the restaurant is closed until 6.30 PM. We asked the restaurant manager of why they informed hotel guests that they open all day if in fact they are not. His answer was, the restaurant is open all day but after lunch time they only serve cold snack such as caesar salad and ham and melon. Who would want to eat cold food in the restaurant surrounded by noise of vacuum cleaner and smell of cleaning solution as they scrubbing the floor during service hour????

If we were not too exhausted that particular day, we would leave the hotel. It was so hopeless to find a standard service, a decent room and food. But, we were pretty much stuck, although the hotel is interconnected to shopping arcade but nothing was open. Extremely annoyed, we went to executive lounge. Or shall we say, it was an unstaffed sitting room with drinks and biscuits which were covered with fruit flies. Few tables were left uncleared. So, God knows how long they have left that drink and food out for. We were hungry indeed, but we did not touch anything that was served. We could not take the risk to be ill too! We almost blew our top, to be honest. It was just a clear insult to any paying customers.

After a long one and half hour wait, the restaurant finally reopened for service. Quick browse on the menu and we ordered our meal. We chose crab and guacamole as starter, also salmon tartar with chopped onion and peppers. When they arrived, they looked rather attractive, but tasteless. Frozen food as usual. And as main course we kept it easy, we ordered baked sea bass with spring potatoes and mediterranean vegetables. Served and filleted on the table, looked very convincing. Tasted ok, the white wine helped. We honestly were too hungry to be fussy. Still had some space for dessert we went for cheese platter and strawberry and pistachio tiramisu. They were average, something that you would expect coming from Sara Lee packets.

Certainly would not come back to stay there again or recommend anybody to stay there. If you have exceptional experience during your stay in Lyon, you are welcomed to share it with us.

Chateau Mirambeau Bordeaux

We have stayed many times at this chateau and not once we were disappointed. Warm and welcoming staff at the entrance door, ready to assist us with the luggage. An impressive lounge decorated with period furnitures was just a perfect place to plunge ourselves into the sofa, stretching our legs and take a sip of home made ice tea and madeleine while the staff preparing our check in paper works. Once that completed the staff escorted us to our room. In there fresh flower and small sweet bites are waiting for you to be savoured.
When we arrived early, we normally take a stroll around the estate or enjoy an ice cold beer at the terrace or even take a dip in the indoor or outdoor swimming pool or have a little siesta in peace or even play a game of chess. Plenty to do before we got ourselves ready for diner.
7.30 PM.
Time to indulge ourselves with fine cuisine prepared by the chef.

Started with boiled egg with smoked foam and bacon served with truffle soldier and raw sea bass tartar with oyster and hint of tomato. They both were so delightful.
Followed by rack of lamb with carrot, courgette and sweet potato puree (tender, fat was still left on the skin, gave a beautiful flavour, almost as good as the lamb at Le Chalet de la Foret)
Accompanied by Sainte Luce Bellevue – Blaye 2002. Beautiful and inexpensive local wine produced about 20 minutes drive away from the chateau.
Cheese platter with sliced of granny smith and green grapes went perfectly with velvety port wine. Continued by dark chocolate soufflé with pistachio ice cream, slightly overcooked, a little bit dry. Pistachio ice  cream was too heavy to company the soufflé, in our opinion. But it was us being fussy.
We finished of the evening with a couple cognac and coffee.

Waking up fresh the next morning, we had ourselves dressed up ready to taste Mirambeau breakfast at the conservatory. It consisted of continental breakfast and cold cuts and cheeses.
Fresh orange juice, earl grey and coffee. Just enough to start the day. Delightful!

PS: There is a local wine shop just out side of the chateau if you fancy to take back few bottles of Bordeaux wine. Not to be missed!

Trianon Palace Versailles

We have stayed at this hotel several times now. One thing we have noticed, if we book a room on Hilton Honors points reward, we could only expect a room at the outside building (pavilion). Not too bad really, if the weather is good. Just less convenient.
The other inconvenience of our last stay was that we booked a table at Gordon Ramsay restaurant which was confirmed by the receptionist as we checked-in, but minutes later we then informed by the front desk manager that the restaurant was fully booked for private function. And he arrogantly added, we have to book at least two months in advance to dine in that restaurant. We explained how disappointed we were, they should have informed us prior to our arrival as we came purposely to try the Gordon Ramsay restaurant and beside that we had quite a bad experience at their La Veranda restaurant, but no apology offered.
Too tired to explain further, we went straight to our poky little room and freshened up for diner. There was an improvement on the bath and body products though, they provided Salvatore Ferragamo products instead of Crabtree and Evelyn like in other Hilton hotels.
We arrived early, so to secure a table we went to the reception of the La Veranda restaurant, welcomed by the person that we thought was the restaurant manager, very pleasant gentleman, assisted us to choose the table. We mentioned about the fact we were refused at the Gordon Ramsay and his remarks was that he was not aware of private function for that particular evening. Out of curiosity, we crossed check it with the concierge, he said they indeed have private function that evening, but normally is not difficult to book a table at Gordon Ramsay restaurant. They have tables for the next day. Unfortunately, that was the day we had to leave. We were puzzled. How come three persons working for the same hotel have no exact knowledge of what is going on in their hotel??
After few vodka martinis and campari orange after, La Veranda restaurant finally opened. Did not get the table that we booked for (do not ask why), but the table next to it. Never mind, a table is a table, a chair is a chair. So, we started with crab cocktail served with guacamole and egg cocotte with green peas soup and croutons. Crab was tasteless, obviously frozen. Egg cocotte and green peas soup was nice. Overall it was ok. Main course was pad of lamb served with caviar of aubergine and truffle potato. Lamb was tender but watery, not much flavour as the fat around the skin was completely removed. Nowhere near as good as the lamb that we had few days previously at Le Chalet de la Foret. Caviar of aubergine was delightful but unfortunately the truffle potato was undercooked.
Cheese platter was not too bad, though. Cheeses were nice and ripe, went nicely with thin sliced granny smith.
About the dessert, we had cheese cake. Not an old fashion cheese cake we had in mind, but it was light and certainly spared us some space for chocolate souffle.
We have to tell you that the chocolate souffle was not on the menu, but we said to the waitress that any good chef can make souffle, it only takes a bit of time and we did not mind waiting. So about half an hour later, she came with steaming hot chocolate souffle that apparently made by the chef at Gordon Ramsay restaurant. Bingo!!! We finally got a little taste of something out of that restaurant.
Did not meet our expectation though, it was dry and heavy. If we could describe it frankly, it was a combination of chocolate mousse and chocolate fondant in a form of souffle. Not impressed at all.
Ah well... still a different experience. Maybe next time we get to dine properly at Gordon Ramsay restaurant that claimed to be Michelin star restaurant. We will keep you up dated about that.

PS: The hotel is within walking distance to the Versailles Palace, worth visiting!

Vue Maximillian - Munich

That was something what we would call decadent!
To start with we shared 100 gr Kaviar Osetra and the condiments between us with a nice bottle of Krug Grand Cuvee. We enjoyed it so much, it went so quick. We got to fight to scoop the most caviar. If we could get a mortgage that day, we would order a bucket of it :)
Back to reality minutes after with three-quarter empty stomach, we ordered sole meuniere which came out just perfect. Finished of with raspberry cake. Delicious!
Must try!!

PS: If you are in 'burger mood' five minutes walk from Vue Maximillian, you would find Hard Rock Cafe, it never fails to comfort us ;)

Hilton Hotel Munich City

Typical Hilton business hotel. Save choice for a stop over. Our room located on the executive floor was good size and reasonably comfy. All facilities were in place. On their website, they stated that they have two restaurants, but during our stay only one 'Lowen Schanke' was open and serve food all day.
Nice open plan restaurant with extension to the terrace (bier garten). As we sat on our table, we were welcomed with freshly baked bread served with butter and pork fat (naughty but nice, we could not resist).
As starter, we ordered sliced suckling pork served cold with beetroot, marinated turnip and herbed cream, served with curly lettuce and a portion of smoked salmon coated in dill, served with marinated baby spinach. They were both nice, tasty and light starter, really got our appetite going.
Followed by guinea fowl wrapped in thin vermicelli baked in oven to make it crispy served with mushroom marinated with parsley. As side dish was roasted, sliced potatoes with parsley and crispy chopped bacon. Our other main course was pork roast with gravy and sauer kraut served with cheesy dumplings. Both main courses were really tasty, meat was tender, but the roast pork went chewy after a while and they could do with lesser salt.
As we were in Germany, we were tempted to try german wine, so we went for 2005 Trollinger Trocken Wurttemberg. Not too bad, we must admit.
After our main courses we ordered a cheese platter. A combination of 2 creamy cheeses and 3 soft cheeses. Nice and ripe, served with wasabi jelly and grapes. Lovely!
Finished of with creme brulee with sliced strawberry and plum and bavarian cream. Such a delight!
Breakfast at the executive lounge was average powdered scrambled egg and other bits and pieces. Could have done without, really.. it only gave us terrible indigestion after.
Overall stay was ok, would not mind going back there again. Would love to discover more the city area.

Au Repos Des Chasseurs

What a disappointment.
We were really looking forward to experience a local treats but ended up the same old Brussels restaurant that has no clue how to cook a good food, yet they proud to charge above average prices.
Restaurant itself looked very charming, located in the middle of forest, spacious dining room with fresh flowers and plants, seemed quiet cozy, offered a large selection of starters and main courses (mixed of French-Belgian, English and Italian food) but poor quality and awful and intimidating staff.
Having a website and brochures in Dutch, French and English, one would expect the staff are able to speak at least in broken English. But no one bothered to even try.
As soon as they found out we are English speaking customers, they rushed the serving. Suggested an Italian red wine that was ok, but well overpriced. They used a decanter but obviously not in a correct way as they left a lot of sediment in our glasses.
We had shrimps cocktail that was served with a piece of blonde hair of the person who prepared it (we can confirm that, as none of us were blonde).
We complained and they responded quickly by replacing the plate but no apology. We also ordered foie gras cooked in old porto wine, that was basically quite tasteless and a plate of calamari fritters that was rubbery. We asked for an aioli to go with the calamari, but they gave us tartar sauce.
Disaster was not ended there. One of the main courses that we ordered was kidney a la Dijon, it was tough as they left sinew on it.
As for dessert we kept it simple, we ordered Crepe a la maison (Crepe suzette) tasted very orangey but no hint of grand marnier. And it was not prepared in the restaurant as it is normally done (and they do have the equipment in place too…)
So, God knows what they put in it.
Would never recommend, nor going back again.

Le Chalet de la Foret - Brussels

True foodie heaven!
Our first visit to the Le Chalet de la Foret was not totally impressive for several reasons. First, the staff considered us as tourists who will never return again, we were basically ignored. Second, the main course, that was roasted duck, was served too rare and a quite tough. So, on our second visit, which this time we got more recognition and attention, we tried to avoid red meat and stuck to fish dishes, which were excellent!! If we had to mention a negative remark, it would be the portion was too small.
Only recently we visited the restaurant twice in a week, just to show how addicted we got!
These times we wanted to try red meat! Roasted lamb chops sounded like a tempting option. And we were not disappointed. The meat was cooked just perfect and it melt in the mouth. The chef left a bit of fat on the skin to retain the flavour, tasty! A bottle of Burgundy premier cru to go with the lamb and we were blown away!

It was such a treat!
And the jasmin souffle as dessert, completed our lunch. We highly recommended this restaurant! Book in advance, they do get busy during lunch time. Ask for daily special, you will not be disappointed.
